After 1066 the settlement was claimed by William the Conqueror and spent 600 years thriving on a reputation as a place to hunt deer. Even the name Hartley Wintney is derived from the Old English words for ‘deer in a clearing’. The cricket club, founded in 1770, is the oldest in Hampshire, and one of the oldest in the country.
